Tennessee fails to execute Christa Pike after two lethal injections

On Sept. 30, Tennessee gave Christa Pike two doses of pentobarbital at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. She was still alive and snoring, and was taken to a hospital. Gov. Bill Lee paused the rest of the year’s executions and ordered a review. Hours earlier the U.S. Supreme Court had lifted a same-day stay.
