CENTCOM said it disabled two crude carriers and destroyed a third after ballistic missiles were fired at a U.S. carrier and destroyer. Adm. Brad Cooper warned of a tanker-for-tanker response.

U.S. Central Command said Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026, that American forces struck three Iranian crude oil tankers after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. The Navy ships evaded the attacks and no U.S. personnel were harmed. CENTCOM said it permanently disabled the M/T Downy off Kharg Island and the M/T Stark 1 near Jask, and completely destroyed the unladen M/T Kylo in the Gulf of Oman after warning the crew to abandon ship. Adm. Brad Cooper said if Iran shoots at two U.S. ships, the United States will take out three of Iran's. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the U.S. will destroy Iranian oil tankers if Iran shoots at the Navy.
