Trump threatens $5 billion suit over National Guard crime report
Lawyer Alejandro Brito gave the Center for American Progress a Friday deadline to retract a July study finding no measurable crime effect from Guard deployments. CAP president Neera Tanden refused.
President Trump’s personal lawyer demanded the Center for American Progress retract a July 13 report that found no measurable effect of National Guard deployments on violent crime in Washington, Los Angeles, and Memphis, and estimated a $1.7 billion cost if the deployments run through 2026. The Monday letter set a 5 p.m. Friday deadline to retract, apologize, and compensate Trump or face a defamation suit of at least $5 billion. CAP’s lawyer said truth is not defamation. Tanden called the threat a transparent attempt to silence the group and refused to retract. Trump had branded the report a “Radical Left SCAM.”
