President Trump said Friday the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef in for 90 days with no out-of-quota tariff, and that exporters committed to sell it 25% below current market prices. Ground beef averaged $6.89 a pound in July. A White House official said he would sign an executive order within two weeks. He did not name the supplying countries. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and some Republican ranch-state senators opposed the move; USDA said it would help affordability while the herd rebuilds. Economists told Reuters the tonnage is too small to move prices much.
