The U.S. Treasury Department did not credential individual reporters from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News for the G20 finance ministers meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told the AP the decisions had nothing to do with point of view; a spokesperson said nearly 300 journalists from about a dozen countries were welcomed. Newsrooms called the denials an attempt to evade public scrutiny. Germany’s finance ministry won accreditation for a New York Times reporter traveling with Lars Klingbeil but failed to get a Bloomberg reporter in.

The Times said that with the war in Iran, sanctions, bond markets and inflation on the agenda, the stakes of the gathering are significant.

A Bloomberg News spokesperson said denying access undermines media freedom and public accountability.

Bloomberg said it will continue to advocate for full press access while reporting fairly and accurately.

The Wall Street Journal declined to comment.

Treasury said nearly 300 members of the media from about a dozen countries would be welcomed.

Treasury said media access comes with a responsibility to report factual information consistent with established journalistic standards.

The Defense Department designated its press office a classified space inaccessible to journalists.

Trump sued The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.

Trump ordered cuts to state subsidies for public broadcasters.

Trump said NBC journalist Kristen Welker should be reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment.

The Trump administration has moved to limit press access in his second term, including who can cover presidential events.

The meeting includes finance ministers, central bank governors and senior officials from the world’s top economies.
