Talarico’s cash and ad lead turns the Texas Senate race into a toss-up
Austin, TexasPublished 1 Sep 2026
James Talarico has dominated Texas airwaves and fundraising against Ken Paxton. Cook and Fox moved the race to a toss-up as Trump’s Houston stop and outside GOP ads try to close the gap.
Texas’s open U.S. Senate race is a toss-up. Democrat James Talarico, an Austin state representative, has outraised and out-advertised Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton since Paxton beat Sen. John Cornyn in the May runoff. AdImpact figures cited in coverage put Democratic ad spending since June around $31.5 million to Republicans’ $4.7 million; Talarico’s campaign alone is about $31 million, Paxton’s about $119,000–$150,000. Cook Political Report and Fox News moved the seat to toss-up. Talarico holds slim leads in a Fox poll (51–48) and a UT/Texas Politics Project survey (about 3 points). Trump hosted an RNC Houston fundraiser and said he would help Paxton; MAGA Inc. had not yet spent its $400 million-plus. GOP groups including Ted Cruz’s Truth and Courage PAC have begun attacking Talarico over a China land bill. Talarico’s first negative TV ad, and Lone Star Rising spots, call Paxton the most corrupt politician in Texas over his 2023 impeachment — which the Texas Senate acquitted.
