Overnight fighting hit Base 101, the presidential palace and state TV. Niamey's junta called it a contained mutiny; analysts and some diplomats described a coup try, and several outlets said Russia's Africa Corps helped retake the airbase.

Mutinous soldiers attacked Niamey's Base 101 at Diori Hamani International Airport overnight Friday into Saturday 29 August, with gunfire also reported near the presidential palace and a brief blackout at state television. Defense Minister Salifou Mody said troops detained comrades and fired on sensitive sites. By Sunday the junta said it had regained the airbase; state TV showed soldiers paraded and reported dozens killed or arrested. Analysts said Russia's Africa Corps provided ground and air support after Moscow's ambassador said Niger asked for help. Algeria sent aircraft. Junta leader Abdourahamane Tchiani had not appeared publicly.
