Flash flood on Nepal-Tibet border kills about 160; hundreds of tourists missing
Nepal police recovered 157 bodies after an ice-rock avalanche sent a debris flood down the Bhote Koshi. China reported three dead and hundreds missing in Gyirong.
A flash flood along the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday killed about 160 people and left hundreds missing, including foreign tourists on the Mount Kailash route. Nepal police recovered 157 bodies; China reported three dead and about 200 to 265 missing in Gyirong. Experts said an ice-rock avalanche blocked the Lhende Khola and released a surge down the Bhote Koshi. USGS later treated the shaking as a landslide, not an earthquake. Nineteen bridges and about 40 kilometers of road were swept away, and about 430 megawatts of power capacity was damaged.
