Teenage girl shot near Louisville JCPS bus stop, chief says

In a statement, a spokesperson for Jefferson County Public Schools said district police were on scene with LMPD near a bus stop on Beech Street.

"Today is a tragic day. It's not just a tragic day for this family, who has to endure this pain. A child has been shot," said JCPS Superintendent Brian Yearwood during a news conference Tuesday morning.

It's also unclear whether it was random or targeted, but witnesses say they saw a group of teens shoot her, laugh and drive off.

A teenage girl is in critical condition after neighbors say she was shot while waiting for her Jefferson County Public Schools bus Tuesday morning in Louisville’s Park DuValle neighborhood.

During a press conference Tuesday, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said employees from the city’s Office of Violence Prevention will be at the bus stop Tuesday afternoon, “and in days to come, along with enhanced security.” Greenberg said that would include LMPD officers.

Greenberg said the city has been working with JCPS over the past year to ensure that the district’s 10,000 bus stops are well lit.

Neighbors who spoke with LPM News on Tuesday described hearing frequent gunshots in the area.

One neighbor, Eric Spencer, Sr., said he heard the shots and went out to see if any of his neighbors or friends had been hurt.

She knew her 8th grade daughter would have been at the stop that morning to get a JCPS bus to Hudson Middle School, right around the time of the shooting.

Another neighbor, Nikolas Singleton, said he’d like to see a greater police presence in the area going forward.

Butler then drove to the school to talk to her daughter and get more information from the principal. Until then, she said the school had not been in touch with any information about what happened.
