A Saturday-night Downs After Dark maiden at Churchill Downs ended as a no-contest after Lutkenhaus collapsed on the far turn, triggering a six-horse pileup. Three jockeys went to UofL Hospital and win bets were refunded.

Stewards at Churchill Downs declared a Saturday Downs After Dark maiden race a no-contest after Lutkenhaus collapsed on the far turn and five other horses were involved. The 2-year-old was euthanized. Three jockeys were taken to UofL Hospital, and the track refunded win bets.

Shared facts

A six-horse accident occurred during Saturday night's second race at Churchill Downs.

The race was on Churchill Downs' Downs After Dark program.

The incident happened in the second race.

The race was a 6 1/2-furlong maiden for 2-year-olds.

Ten horses lined up for the race.

Lutkenhaus collapsed on the far turn.

Cristian Torres was riding Lutkenhaus.

Other horses and riders could not avoid the fallen horse.

The spill left six horses without a jockey.

The other horses involved were Industrious, Midnight Rumble, Ritornello, Shacklebolt, and Steve Wood.

The other jockeys involved were Keith Asmussen, Axel Concepcion, Francisco Arrieta, Walter Rodriguez, and Martin Garcia.

Lutkenhaus incurred a catastrophic injury to his left front leg.

On-track veterinarians euthanized Lutkenhaus after evaluating him.

Dr. Will Farmer, Churchill Downs Incorporated equine medical director, described the horse injuries.

Lutkenhaus raced for Team Valor.

Rodolphe Brisset trained Lutkenhaus.

Jockeys Martin Garcia, Walter Rodriguez, and Cristian Torres were taken to University of Louisville Hospital.

The three hospitalized jockeys were conscious.

Keith Asmussen, Axel Concepcion, and Francisco Arrieta were cleared by on-site medical staff.

Keith Asmussen took off his remaining mounts, including the final race.

Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation stewards declared the race a no-contest.

Vukota, the 4-5 favorite, crossed the finish line first, followed by Frozenknife, Reinforcement, and Koivun.

The no-contest ruling refunded wagers on the race except multi-race bets.

Racing resumed after a 34-minute delay so medical staff and veterinarians could return to their posts.

Cristian Torres said medical tests at UofL Hospital came back clear and nothing was broken.

Torres said his back and shoulders were sore from horses running over him.

Martin Garcia sustained a rib injury.

Walter Rodriguez showed concussion-like symptoms and was expected to be sidelined about a month.

Industrious was vanned to Steve Asmussen's barn and treated for a left front leg injury.

Shacklebolt incurred lacerations to his right hind leg.

Shacklebolt walked off the track before a van ride to the receiving barn.

Steve Wood and Ritornello each had superficial abrasions and walked back to their barns.

An outrider caught Midnight Rumble, who walked back to the barn area.

Eoin Harty trained Shacklebolt.

Matt Williams trained Ritornello.

Joe Sharp trained Midnight Rumble.

Churchill Downs spokesperson Darren Rogers described the incident.
