Crews blast down Akron's 1953 Route 8 bridge

A controlled explosion on Sept. 27 dropped steel arches of Akron's retired State Route 8 bridge into the valley. The $158 million project is replacing it with two spans.

On Sept. 27, 2026, crews used a controlled explosion to bring down sections of Akron's 1953 State Route 8 bridge over the Cuyahoga River valley. One outlet's article also says the blast was Saturday morning. The $158 million replacement, led by ODOT with Ruhlin and Great Lakes, started in 2023. The new southbound bridge opened in December 2025. The northbound span is expected in 2028.

Shared facts

Akron's Route 8 high-level bridge was built in 1953.

The replacement is a $158 million project.

The project began in August 2023.

The overall project is expected to be finished in 2028.

ODOT is doing the work with the Ruhlin Company and Great Lakes Construction.

One bridge is being replaced by separate northbound and southbound spans.

The new southbound bridge opened to traffic in December 2025.

Both directions of traffic are using the new bridge while the other span is unfinished.

Railings, lights, and barriers were taken off by ordinary demolition methods.

Spans over utilities and railroad tracks were also removed without explosives.

A controlled explosion brought down sections of Akron's closed Route 8 bridge over the river valley.

Route 8 and nearby streets were closed inside about a 1,000-foot safety zone for the blast.

Demolition firm VEIT handled the controlled blast.

VEIT has done large-scale demolitions around the country.

Debris cleanup is expected to run through November.

The next pieces of the new northbound bridge are to be built over the winter and spring.

Beams for the northbound span are to be launched in late spring 2027.

The northbound bridge deck is to be built in the spring and summer of 2028.

The new northbound bridge is expected to open in 2028.

ODOT described the Route 8 replacement as having reached another milestone.

Noirot thanked ODOT staff and the Ruhlin-Great Lakes joint venture.

ODOT carried the blast live on its District 4 Facebook page.

ODOT released video of the demolition, including a drone view.

Route 8 bridge's steel arches tumble as Akron makes way for new span

Facts

ODOT, with project leaders the Ruhlin Company and Great Lakes Construction, said the bridge carried 121,740 vehicles a day, including 11,000 trucks.

The spans serve a main north-south truck and commuter route between Akron, Cleveland, and Canton.

Demolition is underway beside the bridge's partly finished replacement.

ODOT said replacing the bridge is more cost-efficient than continuing repairs.

The older bridge is being removed because of its age.

From a viewing area about a half-mile east, officials estimated the blast at 142 decibels.

At the 8 a.m. blast, about 50 people there felt the sound wave.

Crews detonated 128 linear shaped charges, 100 pounds in all, across the arch over 440 milliseconds.

The blast removed 648 linear feet of the arch.

The bridge was 1,582 feet long, 180 feet tall, and 82½ feet wide.

The bridge's steel truss arch was 940 feet long, according to an ODOT fact sheet.

Remaining arch sections and side piers will be cut apart with cranes.

Removal of the concrete deck began in December 2025.

Mats were laid so the falling truss would land on mounds next to each pier.

Dismantling the bridge is a months-long process that includes the Sept. 27 blast.

More than 5.2 million pounds of steel arch, about 200 truckloads, came down in the blast.

That deck removal sent 3,625 cubic yards of material to a recycling plant in Akron.

Fences and light poles were also removed.

Opinion

The Beacon Journal called the Sunday demolition a key step in the replacement.

The Beacon Journal called the Sept. 27 blast a spectacle that was merely part of the takedown.
