Trump announced a 4,000-troop increase to Afganistan in 2017.
"Some 14,000 U.S. troops have remained in Afghanistan, advising and assisting Afghan forces and conducting counterterrorism operations."
Bolton has previously worked for Fox News and Presidents Ronald Regan, George H.W Bush, and George W. Bush.
Bolton has also worked as a lawyer for Bush during the vote recount in Florida during the 2000 election.

Bolton's relationship with President Trump has deteriorated over political concerns "on North Korea, Iran and Afghanistan, among other issues."
Trump states that he asked Bolton for his resignation.
"I will have my say in due course. But I have given you the facts on the resignation. My sole concern is US national security.” said Bolton.
According to Bolton when he offered Trump his resignation, Trump said ‘Let’s talk about it tomorrow."
Pompeo said “the president’s entitled to the staff that he wants at any moment.”
