Mattis on Leaving Trump

Defense Secretary James Mattis has decided to leave his office much earlier than expected. It seems like he finally snapped and has had enough of the Trump administration. NBC appears to show this well and is very informing about what had happened so far. Although they do lean left, and it comes through by the end. As is usual, Trump gets in a few hits, but NBC doesn't give him any backup besides himself. They offer "definite proof" in the form of Pat Toomey, who is Republican and seems very scared of Trump as he is explained in the article. NBC shows him as a quickly triggered character which is up to interpretation.

"President Donald Trump announced in a Sunday tweet (12/23/18) that Defense Secretary James Mattis will leave his position on Jan. 1, two months earlier than Mattis's announced departure date in his resignation letter last week."
"Trump said Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, a former Boeing executive, will take over as acting Defense Secretary."
"Mattis led U.S. Central Command from 2010 to 2013, but his time at the helm was cut short because of disagreements with the Obama administration on Iran."
"Soon after Trump announced plans to remove troops from Syria, the president ordered the withdrawal of 7,000 troops from Afghanistan."
Opinion (14)
"The letter was sharply critical of Trump, which may have led to his expedited exit."
"Patrick has a long list of accomplishments while serving as Deputy, & previously Boeing," Trump tweeted. "He will be great!"
"The New York Times reported that Trump, angry with coverage of Mattis' resignation, sought to expedite his departure. "
"Trump administration aides told The Times that Trump became increasingly furious in the days following Mattis' strongly worded resignation letter. The Times reporting added that the president initially 'did not understand just how forceful a rejection of his strategy Mr. Mattis had issued.'"
"After initially praising Mattis in announcing his resignation last week (12/16/18), Trump jabbed his top military official on Saturday (12/22/18)."
"Some thought I shouldn’t, I thought I should," Trump wrote on possibly firing Mattis. "Interesting relationship — but I also gave all of the resources that he never really had. Allies are very important — but not when they take advantage of U.S."
"That comment appeared to refer to one of the most-discussed lines of Mattis' resignation letter — one in which he suggested that that his views on how to treat America's allies differed from Trump's."
"My views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues," Mattis wrote.
"Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position," he continued, adding that his last day in office would be Feb. 28. 2019
"Many Republicans and Democrats have expressed worry about Mattis' departure. On NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania said he was disturbed by how Mattis described Trump's worldview."
“I think Gen. Mattis has put his finger on where the president has views that are very, very distinct from the vast majority of Republicans and, probably, Democrats, elected and unelected," Toomey said. "And I think the president does not share, I would say, my view that the Pax Americana of the post-war era has been enormously good for America.”
"In confirming a replacement for Mattis, Toomey said he is 'going to be looking for' someone who 'shares a more traditional view about America's role in the world.'"
"Trump tweeted that he gave the retired four-star general 'a second chance' after former President Barack Obama 'ingloriously fired' him."
Mattis also said, "We must do everything possible to advance an international order that is most conducive to our security, prosperity and values, and we are strengthened in this effort by the solidarity of our alliances."

Mattis has a new book.
Opinion (17)
"Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis in an interview released Thursday defended his resignation from the Trump administration last year as well as his decision not to criticize the sitting president outwardly."
"I had no choice but to leave," Mattis told The Atlantic in the interview. "That's why (my resignation) letter is in the book. I want people to understand why I couldn't stay."
"Mattis cited irreconcilable policy differences in a letter to Trump that took many in Washington by surprise. His latest interview follows a string of public statements Mattis has made implicitly criticizing his former commander in chief, with whom he sharply disagreed on matters of international engagement and alliances."
Mattis said "I've been informed by four decades of experience, and I just couldn't connect the dots anymore,"
"In this most recent interview, Mattis declined to directly address the character of Trump — with whom he had an openly rocky relationship marked by presidential Twitter insults — citing a 'duty of silence' he owed the administration."
"If you leave an administration, you owe some silence," Mattis said. "When you leave an administration over clear policy differences, you need to give the people who are still there as many opportunities as possible to defend the country."
"I may not like a commander in chief one fricking bit, but our system puts the commander in chief there, and to further weaken him when we're up against real threats—I mean, we could be at war on the Korean Peninsula, every time they start launching something," Mattis said.
"When pressed on Trump's tweet expressing calm over North Korea firing 'off some small weapons' — a view at odds with his national security adviser John Bolton and then-host Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe — and belittling former Vice President Joe Biden, Mattis cited his experience as a retired Marine Corps general."
"Any Marine general or any other senior servant of the people of the United States would find that, to use a mild euphemism, counterproductive and beneath the dignity of the presidency," he said.
Mattis went on to say, "Let me put it this way. I've written an entire book built on the principles of respecting your troops, respecting each other, respecting your allies. Isn't it pretty obvious how I would feel about something like that?"
"There is a period in which I owe my silence," he said. "It's not eternal. It's not going to be forever."
"Mattis has recently addressed policy matters as they relate to Trump, namely in his forthcoming book, 'Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead.' "
"Since taking office, Trump, a frequent NATO skeptic, has been sharply critical of some members of the alliance, and notably broke with members of the G7 over the weekend in pushing for Russia to rejoin the group."
"In an essay adapted from the book that was published in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, Mattis rejected Trump's preference for American isolationism, writing in a new essay that the US is "at increasing risk in the world" when it doesn't embrace its allies."
"Although Mattis doesn't mention Trump by name, it's clear he's referring to the commander in chief, making the essay another public criticism of the President over what Mattis sees as the importance of maintaining US alliances and engagement around the world. Mattis' views were shared after he left the administration."
Mattis wrote, "A polemicist's role is not sufficient for a leader. A leader must display strategic acumen that incorporates respect for those nations that have stood with us when trouble loomed."
Matis continued, "Returning to a strategic stance that includes the interests of as many nations as we can make common cause with, we can better deal with this imperfect world we occupy together. Absent this; we will occupy an increasingly lonely position, one that puts us at increasing risk in the world,"

"He warned Mr. Trump that he won’t stay quiet forever, The Atlantic reported on Thursday."
“If you leave an administration, you owe some silence. When you leave an administration over clear policy differences, you need to give the people who are still there as many opportunities as possible to defend the country,” he said.
Mattis said, “We have to give the people who are protecting us some time to carry out their duties without me adding my criticism to the cacophony that is right now so poisonous.”
"While the former U.S. Marine Corps general said it’s inappropriate to 'endanger the country by attacking the elected commander in chief,' Mr. Mattis said he might not keep that duty of silence forever."
“There is a period in which I owe my silence. It’s not eternal. It’s not going to be forever,” Mattis said.
"Mr. Mattis spoke out this week for the first time since he left the Department of Defense, using excerpts from his new book 'Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead' to pen an essay in The Wall Street Journal Wednesday, saying he 'did as well as I could for as long as I could.' "

Lawler is president of RL Leaders, a strategy consultancy.
Opinion (15)
"The good news is that former Secretary of Defense James Mattis has written a book on leadership, Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead."
"Co-authored with another retired officer Bing West, the book is a reflection on leadership from one who wore the uniform of a Marine and achieved its highest rank."
"Given Mattis experience as a combat commander as well as a bibliophile with a personal library of some 7,000 books, Call Sign Chaos holds great promise. "
"So “bad news"? Some observers want him to weigh in on his experience as President Donald Trump's defense secretary." But he won't respond.
"Other than in passing, President Trump is absent. Trump supporters, of course, will not mind. Trump critics will not be satisfied. They want to know the answer to the question that Jeffrey Goldberg posed in his interview with Mattis for The Atlantic—' Donald Trump fit for command?' "
"When Goldberg, who has known Mattis for years, pressed him about 'a duty to warn the country if it is endangered by its leader?' Mattis replied, 'I didn’t cook up a convenient tradition here. You don’t endanger the country by attacking the elected commander in chief.' "
Mattis added, “I may not like a commander in chief one fricking bit, but our system puts the commander in chief there, and to further weaken him when we’re up against real threats—I mean, we could be at war on the Korean peninsula, every time they start launching something.”
"For perspective, I checked in with a colleague, Brian Layer, a retired U.S. Army brigadier general. 'The American people see general and flag officers differently. When they are introduced as general or admiral, they may as well be wearing a uniform, their fellow citizens see them differently and many believe they have special insight so when they speak, their opinions carry extra weight.' He said. "
"Layer adds, 'If former generals become viewed as a bunch of political hacks it won't be long before the active generals are perceived the same way and their advice is discounted because of it. Then the system just breaks down.' "
Layer added that politicians need to do their part in keeping civilian and military practices distinct by casting them in partisan roles. “Our nation's military belongs to the people and keeping its professional ethic strong is in the interest of all of us.”
"Mattis ends his book with his resignation letter to Trump. Consider it a coda to his thoughts on leadership. And as Mattis said to Goldberg, 'I had no choice but to leave. That’s why the letter is in the book. I want people to understand why I couldn’t stay. I’ve been informed by four decades of experience, and I just couldn’t connect the dots anymore.'"
"In a subsequent interview, Mattis told Goldberg, 'There is a period in which I owe my silence. It’s not eternal. It’s not going to be forever.' "
"As Goldberg explained in his own interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, the leadership tome that Mattis has penned is filled with the challenges leaders face and behaviors they should exhibit. Mattis extols praiseworthy leadership behaviors that stand in contrast to the transactional practices the President exhibits. As such, they serve as a kind of commentary by comparison."
"Officers at every level are encouraged to speak out when they learn of conduct unbecoming of men and women in uniform. This includes speaking truth to power even to superior officers. Mattis knows this code well and likely will share further thoughts on Trump. The question is when."
Mattis explains, "If you leave an administration, you owe some silence. When you leave an administration over clear policy differences, you need to give the people who are still there as much opportunity as possible to defend the country."

Trump to Deregulate Methane

The issue of global warming is a loaded debate already, without dragging in politics. The topic itself is an open debate and full of disagreement; this article assumes it is a closed discussion and then uses that to write its narrative of the new EPA regulations. The reader is reminded of the partisan politics that may or may not be driving these changes. So while it does report the facts, it does color them slightly. A point of interest is the statistic that methane makes up almost 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. The article adds no context for what makes up this 10%, whether it is found in nature or caused by man. Remarks for the article past the word-count cutoff: companies' statements on the new EPA regulations; only one included that supports them.

Curbing of these organic compounds will still result in reducing of some methane emissions.
The new EPA plan is subject to public review.
The new EPA plan could be finished in 2020, according to analysts.
The most noted greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide.
Methane is the second most noted greenhouse gas.
Methane has 80 times more power of trapping heat than carbon dioxide for its first 20 years in the atmosphere.
Most greenhouse emissions come from oil and gas industries.
Cattle and agriculture also make up part of the emissions.
The EPA states that new regulations will save between $17-19 million for the oil and gas industries per year.

More US-China Trade War

China and the United States are on obviously shaky ground right now. President Trump and the Chinese government have gone back and forth with each other with tariffs and other political things to try to get under each other's skin. Or at least that's what I understand from this article. It is as if Trump runs the country like a headless chicken and nobody can stop him as far as the media is concerned. He is always the cause of every problem as far as they can see. Beyond that, it is pretty fair both ways. Arguments on both sides get some time but I still consider this an anti-Trump article

"The US-China trade war ratcheted up yet again on Friday, 8/24/19."
"China's Finance Ministry also announced plans to resume tariffs on US imports of automobiles and automobile parts."
" The tariffs would be 25% for vehicles or 5% on parts and would take effect on December 15th."
"The new tariffs will target 5,078 products, including soybeans, coffee, whiskey, seafood, and crude oil."
"The United States postponed the implementation of about half of those tariffs, which will cover several categories of Chinese-made consumer goods, until December."
"US President Donald Trump responded swiftly, saying Friday afternoon he was increasing rates on existing tariffs on Chinese goods."
The American Farm Bureau Federation said the tariff announcement "signals more trouble for American agriculture."
"The US Trade Representative's office did not immediately comment on China's tariffs announcement."
"Industrial production in China — an important indicator for the country's economy — grew just 4.8% in July compared to a year earlier, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics."
"American factories are also contracting for the first time in a decade and red lights are flashing in the bond market, where the yield curve has inverted. "
The US Chamber of Commerce, which represents the interests of more than three million businesses, called on China and the United States to "get back to the table" to discuss issues important to both sides, including intellectual property and market access.
Opinion (12)
"The $250 billion of goods and products from China currently being taxed at 25% will be taxed at 30%, Trump said on Twitter."
Trump earlier in the day said US companies should move operations from China in response to their tariffs which seem to be made out of spite.
"We don't need China and, frankly, would be far better off without them," Trump wrote on Twitter.
"Trump also "ordered" American companies 'to immediately start looking for an alternative to China.'"
The National Retail Federation issued a statement calling the demand "unrealistic."
"For years, retailers have been diversifying their supply chains, but finding alternative sources is a costly and lengthy process that can take years. It is unrealistic for American retailers to move out of the world's second-largest economy," the group said.
"We know continued retaliation only adds to the difficulties farm and ranch families are facing and takes the situation in the exact wrong direction," the statement said.
"US markets, which had struggled for direction earlier in the day, dropped on Trump's comments."
" That's the worst growth for that sector in 17 years."
"Such inversions, where the 10-year Treasury yield dips below the two-year Treasury rate, are historic predictors of a coming recession."
"Consumer spending, which has remained a bright spot of the American economy, could be hurt by higher prices from the pending tariffs on goods like phones, video games, and athletic shoes."
"Today's Chinese retaliation is unfortunate, but not unexpected. The fact of the matter is that nobody wins a trade war, and the continued tit-for-tat escalation between the U.S. and China is putting significant strain on the U.S. economy, raising costs, undermining investment, and roiling markets," the statement said.

"These latest US levies raise existing penalties on $250 billion in goods being imported from China to a 30 percent tax."
"Friday’s announcement builds off several earlier rounds of tariffs that Trump had previously laid out. "
"Last fall, the US levied a 10 percent tariff on $200 billion in Chinese imports, with a focus on products that are predominately sold to businesses."
"Before China announced its retaliatory tariffs Friday, Trump had said he would delay some of the tariffs slated for September 1st. This was due to concerns that they would slow spending during the holiday season."
Opinion (13)
"These tariffs are themselves a Chinese response to earlier US penalties."
"Trump waited to announce this development until after the stock market had closed."
Trump said. "For many years China (and many other countries) has been taking advantage of the United States on Trade, Intellectual Property Theft, and much more. Our Country has been losing HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year to China, with no end in sight…."
Trump continued saying "…Sadly, past Administrations have allowed China to get so far ahead of Fair and Balanced Trade that it has become a great burden to the American Taxpayer. As President, I can no longer allow this to happen! In the spirit of achieving Fair Trade, we must Balance this very…."
Trump said "…unfair Trading Relationship. China should not have put new Tariffs on 75 BILLION DOLLARS of United States product (politically motivated!). Starting on October 1st, the 250 BILLION DOLLARS of goods and products from China, currently being taxed at 25%, will be taxed at 30%…"
Trump also said, "…Additionally, the remaining 300 BILLION DOLLARS of goods and products from China, that was being taxed from September 1st at 10%, will now be taxed at 15%. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
"Trump’s move ups the ante on an increasingly tense trade war that’s causing growing fallout in the stock market."
"Trump may be reacting to China’s latest moves now, but the country’s recent tariffs were actually in response to actions he had previously taken."
As Vox’s Jen Kirby said, "China, of course, is pushing back against Trump’s own levies. The president in August announced 10 percent tariffs on $300 billion in Chinese products starting September 1st, which, when combined with previous tariffs, effectively taxes nearly all Chinese goods."
"Those tariffs applied to popular consumer goods including cellphones and clothing and are now scheduled for December 15th, a timeline his Friday tweets did not comment on."
"Trump’s use of tariffs is part of a larger protectionist strategy he’s employed in what he says is an effort to bring jobs back to the US, curb the US trade deficit, and hold China accountable for alleged intellectual property abuses."
"Vox’s Jen Kirby noted, 'China’s latest move is a reminder that Washington and Beijing are no closer to ending this economic brinksmanship or signing any sort of deal. China and the US are supposed to resume trade talks in September, but no date has been set yet.'"
"Given the uncertainty plaguing not only the US economy but other economies around the world — including Germany and China — Trump’s ongoing spat over tariffs does little to ease worries about a potential recession, even if investors won’t fully react to the news until Monday."

"'The president has been increasingly frustrated in the last three months’' with China after the May breakdown of talks that he believed were about to yield a deal, said Michael Pillsbury, a China expert with the Hudson Institute in Washington with whom Trump has consulted in the past."
"Trump’s most likely response, Pillsbury said, would be to raise tariffs from 10% to 25% on remaining imports from China that are due to start taking effect Sept 1st."
"But he had other ways to increase pressure, Pillsbury added, including giving the final green light to sales of F-16s to Taiwan that have been signed off on by the State Department."
"Derek Scissors, a China expert at the American Enterprise Institute who has also advised the administration, agreed that an increase in tariffs was the most likely course of action, though it could be staged to give China more time to respond."
"Trump’s order to U.S. companies to abandon China would mean very little in the short-term, Scissors said. But the president does have other ways he could increase pressure on U.S. companies to stop doing business with China, particularly if he chose to invoke a national security emergency and ban tech companies from selling certain products to Chinese buyers."
“It’s worth the market being a little nervous that U.S. tech companies are involved with China and that they are providing China with dual-use technologies,’’ Scissors said. “That’s what the hawks are angry about. So the president can take action against those companies not by ‘I hereby order,’ but by starting a process where the direct pressure on them goes up.’’

"China and the United States have begun imposing additional tariffs on each other’s goods in the latest escalation of their bruising trade war that has sent shockwaves through the global economy."

"Independent Australian market strategist, Greg McKenna, said that market concerns had been repeatedly soothed by conciliatory words from Beijing and Washington. "
McKenna said “All the while, the tariffs are actually being imposed and the global growth, earnings, and interest rate cycles are pointing down again,” he said. “On top of that, the inverted US yield curve suggests to many that at best the US economy is slowing materially and at worst that the recession count down has begun.”
"But Chinese state media struck a defiant note on Sunday.

Italian PM Resigns

This review is about Italy's concerning political situation. As most opposing politicians tend to be, neither of the sides could agree on much and their Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, had enough. The article tends to let the opponents speak for themselves which I would count in their favor, but they do give some support to Conte along the way. But they went after Conte at some points of the article.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced his resignation on Tuesday 8/20/19.
Conte’s resignation was prompted after Matteo Salvini tabled the no-confidence motion 12 days ago.

Salvini is the leader of the anti-European Union and anti-immigration party.
"Salvini has been enjoying a surging popularity that encouraged him to call for an election in a bid to gain more power."
"Salvini officially pulled his support from the government coalition this month, saying it no longer has a workable majority."
"What hasn’t worked out well for Salvini is the awkward coalition government he’s a member of, which consists of his party and the Five Star Movement."

"Conte listened to the rest of Tuesday's Senate debate before submitting his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella."
President Mattarella will first hold "consultations," or, official meetings, with the speakers of the Senate and the representatives of all the other political parties on Wednesday, 8/21/19
Conte became prime minister in June 2018.
Conte was a law professor with no previous political experience.
"Those disputes reached fever pitch, as the two parties engaged in a bitter political standoff over a migrant ship that has been stranded off Italy for 19 days.
The courts ruled that said the boat should be allowed to come ashore.
"Salvini eventually allowed 27 unaccompanied minors to disembark the ship."
The rail project was supported by the League.
"The turmoil comes at a difficult time as Italy's parliament must approve and present its draft budget to European Union leaders in Brussels by mid-October."
"Politicians are also working to finalize reforms proposed by the Five Star Movement which would slash the country's parliament by more than 300 seats."
Salvini refused to allow the Open Arms to dock.
Opinion (14)
In a speech, Conte launched a scathing attack on Salvini, the country's Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister.
"Salvini pushed for new elections, saying that the government coalition between the hardline anti-immigrant League party and the anti-establishment Five Star Movement no longer holds a majority in parliament."
"Conte said Salvini's demand for fresh elections — "a mere 18 months after the last ones were held" — was "irresponsible."
Conte accused him of putting the national interest at risk to advance his own personal interests.
"Conte also slammed Salvini, who was sitting next to him throughout his speech, for what he described as a lack of statesmanship."
Conte- "Asking citizens to vote every year is irresponsible,"
The resignation potentially set "…Italy off on a path towards the new elections Salvini has called for."
After Conte finished his speech in the Senate, Salvini said that he would "do what I did all over again," adding: "I am a free man. I am not afraid of the judgment of Italians."
Salvini then said he wanted to offer Italians a "future of growth and prosperity."
"Salvini also defended his policies on Europe and immigration, which caused the coalition to fall apart. "
He said: "are we or are we not a sovereign country, free to protect its borders, its beaches!"
Conte demanded that Salvini "urgently adopt the necessary measures to ensure assistance and protection for minors present in the boat."
"Salvini insisted that the decision was "exclusively" Conte's responsibility."
Tensions between the two parties rose after a split vote over a planned high-speed rail link between Italy and France.

Italy just had elections in March 2018.
The fractured results of the elections forced an odd marriage between the anti-establishment Five Star Movement and the Lega party.
"When Salvini took over leadership of the Lega in 2013, it was a regionalist party with a narrow focus on northern Italy (its full name is Lega Nord, or Northern League), and it lacked national appeal."
He pushed this party to the right and embraced a populist, “Italians first” message.
"But the Five Star Movement received the most votes — about 32 percent — in the elections in March 2018."
Salvini’s Lega got about 17 percent of the vote.
Opinion (20)
"Italy has been slow-walking into a political crisis for weeks. Now it’s here."
His resignation effectively collapsed the country’s government.
"In a speech before the Italian Senate, Conte blamed his deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, for the mess, accusing him of being irresponsible."
Conte also said that Salvini is putting “his own interests and those of his party” ahead of Italy’s, at the risk of political and financial instability.
"Conte is not totally wrong: Salvini has largely orchestrated this political drama."
"Salvini has been angling for weeks for snap elections, in the hopes that his rising popularity and success in May’s European Parliament elections would give him enough support that he could become prime minister outright after a new vote."
"It was a fragile coalition, to begin with, and divisions between the two and Salvini’s recent power play made it recently untenable."
"But Conte’s resignation effectively preempted the vote, upending the government anyway."
"Conte’s attacked Salvini’s “irresponsible” actions for setting this crisis in motion."
But Salvini said had said Tuesday he’d “do everything all over again.”
"But it all might not work out as perfectly as Salvini originally plotted. Right now, there’s a chance he won’t get the fall elections he desperately desires. Instead, his scheme could backfire, and he might get kicked out of government altogether."
Matteo Salvini's rise to power fits into a broader resurgence of right-wing populism that swept Europe in recent years.
"Salvini helped changed that, especially in the lead-up to the 2018 elections. "
"Most notably, he embraced an anti-immigrant platform at a time when Italy was on the front lines of Europe’s refugee and migrant crisis."
"A savvy politician, Salvini plays up the anti-elitist, “man of the people” vibe, and he’s skilled at promoting this persona on social media."
"He also invokes religion a lot, something Conte criticized him for during his resignation speech on Tuesday."
Conte says it “undermined the principle of secularism of the modern state.”
"All of this has worked out well for Salvini so far. He’s arguably the most popular politician in Italy right now."
Georgetown University political scientist Hans Noel described the party as “like what would happen if you put Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, and Jon Stewart in a blender.”
"Thus ensued a long and complicated process of trying to form a government, in which neither the left nor the right could do so without the support of the Five Star Movement."

Conte's resignation comes at the same time as the populist League party’s calls for a no-confidence vote and a snap election.
Matteo Salvini is the Italian interior minister whose League is in a coalition government with the 5 Star party,
The resignation won’t automatically trigger a snap election.
"It will be up to President Sergio Mattarella to decide whether to call a new election or let the 5 Star party try to form another government."
"Salvini’s push for new elections is also favored by Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia and the far-right Brothers of Italy party."
"Italy is also in a standoff with the EU that demands that the Italian government enact a series of austerity measures in exchange for necessary financial support."
Opinion (6)
"Conte blasted Salvini as 'irresponsible' for putting the country into a political crisis and said it will have 'major consequences on the country and its economy.'"
“This government terminates here,” Conte said during a speech to the Senate in Rome.
"But fresh elections may not happen as 5 Star are reportedly in talks with the establishment center-left Democratic Party to possibly form a new government."
"The political crisis in Italy comes as the country is facing economic difficulties."
"Salvini has openly scorned the EU’s demands."
"Salvini has promised the Italian people on Tuesday that he would introduce tax cuts and public spending worth $55 billion if he takes control of the government."

Trump Administration Creates New Standards for Immigration

On the Statue of Liberty is a poem welcoming immigrants to America. Some believe this poem excludes those coming to live purposely on American welfare. They are both right and wrong. Context is everything. Considering the time the poem was placed on the Statue of Liberty, people were running from Europe to start a new life. There was essentially no welfare in America back then, and if living in America was the goal, the means were to work and provide for the family. Nowadays, the blessing of welfare presents itself to do both good and ill. If there are those who want to escape from tyranny by fleeing to America, by all means do so. However, the only way to do so honorably is to work and provide for the family. Now that the Immigration Administration has released a new rule making it harder for immigrants suspected of meaning to live on American welfare to obtain a green card, many people are upset because they believe we deny what we advertise. The author presents both sides of this argument, though not extremely clearly.

Cuccinelli emended the famous words of the Statue of Liberty (SOL) in an interview Tuesday, after the new rule was released.
Rachel Martin is from the Nation Public Radio (NPR).
Early Tuesday, Martin asked Cuccinelli if he agreed that the graven words on the SOL are part of the American ethos.
The 1st U.S. public charge law was codified in 1882.
"The New Colossus," Lazarus' poem, was writing in 1883.
The plaque of Lazarus' poem was not cast on the SOL until 1903.
Former Representative Beto O'Rourke is a possible 2020 Democratic presidential from El Paso, Texas.
Portnoy asked if the sentiment – "Give us your tired, your poor" – was still operative in the U.S., or if they should come down.
Other Trump admin. officers have been previously challenged about the SOL poem after announcing immigration restrictions.
In August 2017, senior advisor Stephen Miller was asked about the poem.
Miller had recently promoted a skills based immigration proposal, evaluating people based on education level, language ability, and other factors.
Opinion (16)
Cuccinelli said the USA will only welcome immigrants who can "stand on their own two feet" and "not become a public charge."
Later, Cuccinelli added that the poem referred to "people coming from Europe."
"Uh, they certainly are," Cuccinelli replied.
"Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge," Cuccinelli said.
Cuccinelli claimed the U.S. engraved Lazarus' poem on the SOL at "almost the same time" that the U.S. passed its 1st "public charge" rule for immigration.
Cuccinelli called this fact "very interesting timing."
Cuccinelli did not get his timing exactly right.
Cuccinelli said it was about people from European class based societies where people were considered wretched when not in the right class.
O'Rourke tweeted that the "Administration finally admitted what we've known all along: They think the SL only applies to white people."
It is a "substantial expansion" of America's longstanding "public charge" laws.
Studies by the Urban Institute say "millions of American-born children of immigrants will be affected by the new rule."
The Urban Institute also says it could lead to families rejecting benefits they need from fear of its hurting their immigration status.
Cuccinelli replied that he was certainly not prepared to take anything down from the SOL.
Miller, one of the administration's strongest immigration opponents, downplayed the poem's importance.
Miller said the SOL is a symbol of American liberty enlightening the world.
Miller said the poem was added later, not being a part of the original SOL.

Doug Rand worked on immigration policy in the Obama White House, co-founding a technology company helping immigrants obtain green cards.
This new public charge rule denies green cards to immigrants deemed likely to use welfare heavily.
Immigrants seeking permanent U.S. residence include engineers, construction workers, web designers, farmers, truck drivers, or college students.
Cuccinelli is the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Cuccinelli made this statement on NPR's "Morning Edition."
Beto O'Rourke is a former democratic congressman near the border of West Texas and is running for president.
Steamship lines faced fines if they were caught transporting them to the U.S.
Later, legal immigrant workers from Mexico and China faced similar scrutiny.
Opinion (29)
The Trump administration said the recently passed new rule will ensure new legal residents carrying their own weight, without prejudice or favor.
Though the new rule alleviates taxpayers, it crushes the poor from Latin America, Africa, and parts of Asia.
Over time, researchers predict those granted green cards (a step towards citizenship) will become wealthier, but decrease in number.
Better educated immigrants with some self-sufficiency will probably get more green cards.
Fewer green cards will be granted just because someone has a family member in the U.S.
"Immigrants from Europe and Canada are least likely to face problems" under the new rule, according to one study.
Contrastingly, nearly three-fourths of immigrants from Mexico and the Caribbean have modest incomes, jeopardizing their chance of a green card.
Doug Rand: “Never before in our history have we closed off the American dream to strivers who aren’t already middle class,”
Rand said this is an attempt to go back in time and "dramatically change the face of new Americans."
This public charge rule represents a fundamental shift in a nation that historically welcomes impoverished immigrants seeking opportunity.
Immigrants have always either had skills and investment, or little education or money.
Stephen Miller considered the new rule as a "critical piece" of Trump's America 1st immigration agenda.
This new rule aims to reshape the immigrant community.
Supporters of the new rule want fewer poor people who might require public housing and food assistance.
The same supporters want to reject sick people whose sickness may require costly government-paid Medicaid services.
The same supporters want to discourage amateur English speakers who could hold them back from success in a competitive economy.
Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II bluntly said to give him your tired and poor who can "stand on their own two feet" and "will not become a public charge."
In making this statement, Cuccinelli adapted the poem on the Statue of Liberty to a more "Trumpian" view of the country's duty toward immigrants.
CNN later asked Cuccinelli if the Statue of Liberty's historical invitation to the "wretched, poor" was now invalid.
Cuccinelli clarified the poem referred to people from Europe used to class-based society, where those in the wrong class were considered wretched.
O'Rourke said on Twitter that the administration finally admitted what they knew all along: they think the "Statue of Liberty only applies to white people."
"Admitting productive, self-reliant people has long been the objective of America's immigration policy."
The Immigration Act of 1891 was one of the country's first moves to regulate entry into the country.
It permitted the deportation of people deemed burdensome on the public purse.
It mentioned "idiots, insane persons, paupers, or persons likely to become a public charge."
At Ellis Island, arrivals inspected and deemed unfit by public health officials were returned to their own country.
From the beginning, Trump demanded an immigration system based on "merit" that favors high-skilled workers over family connections.
Trump mused why the U.S. doesn't take more people from countries like Norway.
Trump complained about taking immigrants from "s***hole" countries in Africa or Haiti, "wracked by natural disasters."

He was found dead on Saturday.
Jeffrey Epstein was born in 1953 in Brooklyn, New York.
He helped start a program at Harvard with a $6.5 million donation.
In 1998, Epstein took over Wexner’s Manhattan townhouse.
The two became close, and Epstein gained an unusual amount of control over Wexner’s finances.
In the 1980s, he met Leslie Wexner, the billionaire founder of L Brands, the parent company of Victoria’s Secret.
He was soon fired for poor performance.
He dropped out of New York University in the early 1970s but managed to get a job teaching math and physics at Dalton, a prestigious private high school in Manhattan, in 1974.
We do know, however, that dozens of women say Epstein targeted them when they were young and vulnerable
He was a money manager.
Meanwhile, Epstein was known for his “collection” of famous friends, including Bill Clinton and Donald Trump.
They had not been informed ahead of time of the non-prosecution agreement.
Epstein was arrested on new charges in July and held in a New York jail.
But scrutiny into Epstein increased after Julie K. Brown of the Miami Herald reported on details of the agreement last year.
A “non-prosecution agreement” enabled him to avoid jail-time
He was first indicted on sex crime charges in 2007.
He wanted to use his New Mexico ranch as a base to impregnate women, thus spreading his DNA and improving the human race.

"There’s a lot we’ll never know about Jeffrey Epstein."
Epstein’s trial was keenly anticipated because it would be a chance at justice for his accusers
Many wondered if during the investigation, they would find anything about them.
"Now we’ll never know what would have come out at trial, about Epstein or anyone else."
"We may never know how he made his money or how he managed to parlay his way from college dropout to teacher at a high-profile Manhattan high school to money manager to the rich and famous."
“He ruined my life and a lot of girls’ lives,” Michelle Licata, who says Epstein abused her, told the Herald last year. “People need to know what he did and why he wasn’t prosecuted so it never happens again.”
Epstein was apparently able to amass enormous wealth and ingratiate himself with scientists and academics.
Over the years, Epstein was said to have made disturbing comments.

Jeffrey Epstein was a millionaire financier and accused sex trafficker.
He was not on suicide watch at the time of his death.
He was kept in federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.
In July, two sources told NBC News that Epstein was on suicide watch.
Epstein, who was being held on federal sex trafficking charges, was transported Saturday morning from the jail to a hospital in lower Manhattan.
He was in cardiac arrest upon arrival sources say.
U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman in Manhattan said he was aware of these events "to present yet another hurdle to giving Epstein’s many victims their day in Court."
Even with Epstein's death, the investigation into conduct in the indictment against him, including a count of conspiracy, would continue.
"There is nothing at this point to suggest foul play."
Jack Donson, a former longtime federal Bureau of Prisons case manager explained that suicide watch in federal lockup "usually only lasts a few days to a week" due to the amount of manpower the 24-hour surveillance entails.
Epstein was arrested July 6 at an airport in Teterboro, New Jersey, as he returned from Paris on a private jet.

Attorney General William Barr said he was "appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead" while in federal custody.
Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said, "Stopping people from harming themselves is difficult," he said.
"People who face charges similar to Epstein's are often at a high risk of suicide."

Epstein was being held on charges of sex trafficking.
Some victims were as young as 14.
Epstein had been denied bail and faced up to 45 years behind bars on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges unsealed last month.
His arrest last month launched separate investigations into how authorities handled his case initially when similar charges were first brought against him in Florida more than a decade ago.
The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that he had been housed in the jail’s Special Housing Unit, a heavily secured part of the facility that separates high-profile inmates from the general population.
Until recently, the same unit had been home to the Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is now serving a life sentence at the so-called Supermax prison in Colorado.
At the time, it was not clear whether the injuries were self-inflicted or from an assault.
On Friday, more than 2,000 pages of documents were released related to a since-settled lawsuit against Epstein’s ex-girlfriend by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers.
The records contain graphic allegations against Epstein.
Federal prosecutors in New York reopened the probe after investigative reporting by The Miami Herald stirred outrage over that plea bargain.
But his lawyers maintained that the new charges brought by federal prosecutors in New York were covered by the deal and were improper.
Before his legal troubles, Epstein led a life of extraordinary luxury that drew powerful people into his orbit.
Opinion (8)
Cameron Lindsay, a former warden who ran three federal lockups, said the death represents “an unfortunate and shocking failure, if proven to be a suicide.”
“Unequivocally, he should have been on active suicide watch and therefore under direct and constant supervision,” Lindsay said. “When you have an inmate as high profile as Epstein, it’s absolutely imperative the warden set the tone with his or her leadership to ensure these kinds of incidents don’t happen.”
Sigrid McCawley, Giuffre’s attorney, said Epstein’s suicide less than 24 hours after the documents were unsealed “is no coincidence.”
McCawley called on federal authorities to continue their investigation, focusing on Epstein associates who she said “participated and facilitated Epstein’s horrifying sex trafficking scheme.”
“The reckoning of accountability begun by the voices of brave and truthful victims should not end with Jeffrey Epstein’s cowardly and shameful suicide,” McCawley said in a statement. “The victims await the true justice they have sought and deserve.”
Brad Edwards, a Florida lawyer for nearly two dozen other accusers, said that “this is not the ending anyone was looking for.”
“The victims deserved to see Epstein held accountable, and he owed it to everyone he hurt to accept responsibility for all of the pain he caused,” Edwards said in a statement.
Epstein’s arrest drew national attention, particularly focusing on a deal that allowed Epstein to plead guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution in Florida and avoid more serious federal charges.

Uber lost more money this spring then any other quarter.
The company said that almost $4 billion of that amount is due to stock-based compensation.
Even if you exclude that IPO-related cost, the company still lost $1.3 billion.
1.3 billion is 50% more then the second quarter last year.
Their revenue grew by 14% last year.
The $5.2 billion loss size spooked Wall Street
Uber’s shares were down about 5 percent after a few hours.
The company has been nagged by those concerns ever since arriving on Wall Street.
Once anticipated to be valued at as high as $120 billion, public market investors have determined that Uber is now worth only about $73 billion.
That has prompted some criticism of Uber’s leadership.
Opinion (7)
Losses of that size might raise questions on whether it is a sustainable business.
Uber has never been profitable, but it has insisted it could be.
Uber needs several things to happen for them to become more successful.
They need the successful development of autonomous vehicle technology.
They need to box out Uber’s competitors as it grows.
A well run Uber Eats food-delivery business, where customers are fickle.
And the need to ensure that it can keep classifying its drivers as independent contractors rather than employees.

They missed Wall Streets goals sending its shares down 6%.
The company said a price war in the United States was easing.
Uber's second-quarter net loss widened from a loss of $878 million a year earlier.
The report caught investors off guard in part because Uber's smaller rival Lyft Inc on Wednesday had raised revenue expectations and described an easing price war.
Uber reported that revenue growth slowed to 14% to $3.2 billion and fell short of the average analyst estimate of $3.36 billion.
Food delivery Uber Eats grew 72% to $595 million.
Gross bookings, a measure of total value of all services before employee payments rose 31% from a year earlier to $15.76 billion.
Uber is keeping less money per car ride.
Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi said in a press call the competitive environment was starting to rationalize and had been "progressively improving" since the first quarter.
This year would be the peak for investment and losses would lessen in 2020 and 2021, he said.
Uber's costs rose 147% to $8.65 billion in the quarter, including a sharp rise in spending for research and development.
Gross bookings for the year would be $65 billion to $67 billion, it said, in line with Wall Street's target of $65.9 billion.
Uber said its monthly active users rose to 99 million globally, from 93 million at the end of the first quarter and 76 million a year earlier.
Opinion (5)
"Losses are widening and the competition is cut-throat," said Haris Anwar, analyst at financial markets platform Investing.com.
"What's sapping investor confidence and hitting its stock hard after this report is the absence of a clear path to grow revenue and cut costs."
"While we will continue to invest aggressively in growth, we also want it to be healthy growth, and this quarter we made good progress in that direction," Chief Financial Officer Nelson Chai said.
The Company has not made it clear if it will make a profit.
They are trying to convince investors that growth will come not only from its ride services, but also from other logistics and food delivery services.

Uber just reported its second quarterly earnings ever as a public company.
Lyft lost loss of $644 million during the quarter.
When adjusted for things like amortization of intangible assets and stock-based compensation it comes out more favorably.
Uber’s revenue is also growing, but at a slower rate than Lyft.
Len Sherman, adjunct professor of business at Columbia University, seems to think that their business plan is faulty.
"They can’t tax the bars and nightclubs that stay open until 2AM because they know Uber and Lyft will safely transport their passengers home."
"They can’t exploit the positive externalities of their business, but they are held liable for the negative ones."
None of the ride-sharing companies around the world are profitable.
Opinion (9)
"Analysts on Wall Street expected these losses."
Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi is convinced that there is a $12 trillion “total addressable market” that they have yet to get to.
"Uber is saying it can capture 15 percent of all global economic activity."
"That is sure to excite investors, but it could come as a real cost to the quality of life for the rest of us."
"The more growth Uber and Lyft have 'What does traffic look like then? What happens to our air? Our streets?'"
"There is a traffic crisis in many cities in the US, and Uber and Lyft bear some responsibility."
"Wall Street investors don’t care about externalities like traffic congestion or air pollution, only money."
"Local governments don’t care if Uber and Lyft are profitable."
"But they do care when their streets are choked with traffic or when ride-hailing drivers complain about not being able to meet the basic cost of living."

Biden Wants Your Guns

This is a very biased article about gun control. While Biden may not be going about it the right way, the intention is clear. Save lives. The author is obviously against democrats and paints them all the same which isn't good journalism in my opinion The author of this article is a bit scary to me. He linked a website that you can buy flame throwers from in the article. If a child was visiting this site they could do a lot of damage. Or any not responsible person for that matter. This is more of a Facebook post then an article.

Democrats have said for a long time they aren't taking our guns but it looks like that was fake.
Joe Biden says he is coming for the guns if he gets elected.
Biden appeared on CNN and said that his administration will outlaw guns.

“Look, the Second Amendment doesn’t say you can’t restrict the kinds of weapons people can own. You can’t buy a bazooka. You can’t have a flame thrower."
Biden says "we can make a effort to get guns off the streets."
Biden said “That’s not walking into their homes, knocking on their doors, going through the gun cabinets,"
